Turkey not concerned by French referendum proposal: Gül
Speaking at a press conference at Ankara Airport on his return from the US, where he had been attending the General Assembly of the United Nations, Gül said that Turkey was not concerned that some senior French politicians had said Frances should hold a referendum on whether Turkey should be admitted to the EU.
“This does not pose a worry. There are decisions taken prior to this ,” Gul said.
Addressing other issues, Gül said that Turkey would not cut off relations with neighbouring Iraq and that measures were being put in place to ensure the security of Turkish citizens in that country.
Gül said that preparations for the joint meeting of representatives of the European Union and the Confederation for Islam, scheduled for next month in Istanbul, were continuing despite some problems. However, Gül said that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus attending the platform under that name as recognised by the ICO would not mean that the EU recognises the Turkish Cypriot side.
Gül said that the he had not been informed of a proposal by Kofi Annan, the Secretary General of the United Nations, to decrease numbers of peacekeepers based in Cyprus but added that this would not mean that Ankara would increase the Turkish military force stationed on the island.
