‘Turkey Must Prepare for Possible E.U. Rejection’

However, there is an alternative that is not discussed by Turkey’s public– what will happen if the EU rejects Turkey in December?

"Undoubtedly, a positive EU decision will be reflected positively in our economic balances, and this also will be an acknowledgement of a right. What will happen if it does not happen? It is not the end of the world. Of course, there will be negative effects, but we have to be ready for this possibility. Therefore, we have to have Plans A, B, and C," said Ankara Chamber of Industry (ATO) President, Zafer Caglayan. He also highlights that if there are options, the negative effects will be kept to a minimum.

Caglayan summarized his opinions on the EU as follows: "If the EU does not give a date, it is neither a start nor an end. We have to be ready for any kind of result."

Bilgi University Professor, Soli Ozel, thinks there is a high possibility of a positive decision. A decision in that direction will have a positive impact on the Turkish economy. While Ozer draws attention to the economic impact of a possible negative decision from the EU, he thinks that the decision will make the process uncertain.

According to the Foreign Capital Association (YSD), if the expected decision is made, it will have a positive effect on the economy and foreign capital. Secretary-General Mustafa Alper said: "A possible negative decision on the membership of Turkey causes a short-term waving, foreign capital pauses, and the expected increase cannot occur, however, we do not expect this kind of decision. On the contrary, we are expecting a positive decision. And, this will be really beneficial for our foreign capital and economy."
