Turkey Launches Automatic Train Inspection Station for Rail Safety
Turkey is launching an automatic train inspection station to improve railway safety and reduce risks. This innovative automatic train inspection system will identify cracks, brake malfunctions, and other issues before they cause serious breakdowns. As reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply, this system marks a new phase in the country’s rail infrastructure. Managed remotely from Ankara, the system enables real-time inspections even while trains are moving.

Developed by Turkish State Railways (TCDD) and TÜBİTAK RUTE, the OTMI project is a result of Turkey’s effort to modernize its railway network. The collaboration, started in 2021, introduced cutting-edge train maintenance technology, which was first tested successfully at the Köseköy station in 2023. This innovation aims to prevent accidents by identifying potential issues early on, thus improving both safety and train efficiency.

By the end of this year, the automated railway system will become fully operational. It will improve the reliability of Turkey’s train fleet, offering more secure and timely services to passengers. Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu emphasized that the technology allows continuous monitoring, setting a new standard for railway safety improvements in Turkey.
The benefits of OTMI go beyond just detecting technical faults. It’s a part of Turkey’s broader strategy to enhance its TCDD train inspection processes and improve the overall performance of its railway services. The focus is on predictive maintenance, which reduces the need for emergency repairs and extends the lifespan of critical components like brakes and pantographs.
As Turkey moves forward with these upgrades, automated railway systems will become the backbone of its railway operations. This significant investment in railway technology will not only improve safety but also optimize the operational efficiency of trains across the country. Turkey’s rail sector will benefit from fewer delays and smoother operations, ultimately providing passengers with a safer and more reliable experience.
