Turkey joins Europe in anti-corruption efforts
The treaty envisages extended international cooperation in the fight against crimes of corruption. Efforts to draft a treaty that foresees international measures to be taken were initiated by the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) in 1999.
International cooperation on intelligence, the easing of extradition for those convicted of corruption and the removing of immunity are among the most important measures targeted by the treaty.
The treaty also suggests harsher punishment aiming at deterrence for those convicted of corruption.
