Turkey got the result it needed: Turkey: 2- Brazil: 2

Brazil, who needed to win the match to advance, could only get one of it’s two necessary goals to win, with midfielder Alex striking in the third minute of stoppage time. Ronaldinho tustled with Turkey ‘keeper Rustu Recber in an effort to get the ball back to midfield, receiving his second caution and being ejected from the match. By the time the ball was finally placed and then put in play, the final whistle blew to the delight of the almost sold-out, pro-Turkey crowd of 29,170.

Although they did not get the win that it looked like was all but locked up, Turkey’s favorable result had to be some kind of revenge for the two tough losses that they suffered in the opening round and semifinals at the hands of the top ranked team in the world on the way to their 2002 World Cup title. With Brazil finishing a disappointing third in Group B, it marks the first time since 1987 that they have been knocked out in the opening round of a major international tournament.
