Turkey – Factors to watch on June 13

Here are news, reports and events that may affect Turkish financial markets on Friday.

The lira USDTRY traded at 39.4250 against the U.S. dollar at 0417 GMT, compared with a close of 39.3525 on Thursday.

The main BIST 100 share index XU100 closed 1.71% lower at 9,520.22 points on Thursday.

GLOBAL MARKETS

Stocks dived in Asian trade on Friday, led by a selloff in Wall Street futures, while oil prices surged after Israel conducted a military strike on Iran, sending investors scurrying to safe havens such as gold and the Swiss franc.

The escalation in hostilities in the Middle East – a major oil producing region – adds a fresh layer of uncertainty for financial markets at a time of heightened pressure on the global economy from U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive and erratic trade policies.

STRIKES ON IRAN

Israel said it targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories and military commanders on Friday at the start of what it warned would be a prolonged operation to prevent Tehran from building an atomic weapon.

Iranian media and witnesses reported explosions including at the country’s main uranium enrichment facility at Natanz, while Israel declared a state of emergency in anticipation of retaliatory missile and drone strikes.

CENTRAL BANK POLICY

Turkey’s central bank took another small step toward eventually easing policy, analysts said, when on Thursday it provided 100 billion lira in funding via a repo for the third day in a row.

Turkey’s Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz will attend opening ceremonies and meet industrialists in the southern city of Gaziantep.
