Turkey – Factors to watch on July 14

Here are news, reports and events that may affect Turkish financial markets on Monday.

The lira USDTRY was quoted at 40.1695-40.2350 against the U.S. dollar at 0423 GMT, compared with Friday’s close of 40.1750.

The main BIST 100 share index XU100 closed 0.26% higher at 10,358.46 points on Friday.

GLOBAL MARKETS

Wall Street and European share futures pulled Asian indices lower on Monday as the latest salvo of threats in the U.S. tariff wars kept investors on edge, though there were still hopes it was mainly bluster by President Donald Trump. Trump on Saturday said he would impose a 30% tariff on most imports from the EU and Mexico from August 1, even as they are locked in long negotiations.

PKK DISARMAMENT

President Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday called for full support for the disarmament of Kurdish militants that began with a handover of the first batch of weapons by Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) forces, a step he said opened a new page for the country.

Thirty PKK militants burned their weapons at the mouth of a cave in northern Iraq on Friday, marking a symbolic but significant step toward ending a decades-long insurgency against Turkey.

TREASURY AUCTIONS

The Treasury will issue a new two-year fixed coupon bond maturing on July 14, 2027 and a new five-year fixed coupon bond maturing on July 10, 2030. It will also tap a four-year CPI-indexed bond maturing on June 13, 2029.

ZERO TARIFF ON CORN IMPORTS

Turkey has set a zero tariff for 500,000 tonnes of corn imports until the end of July, the country’s Official Gazette said on Monday.

MAIN OPPOSITION PARTY

Ozgur Ozel, leader of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), will visit Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Public Prosecutor Muhsin Senturk (0800 GMT) and chair the CHP’s central executive board meeting at party headquarters. (1030 GMT)

TOURISM MINISTER

Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy will attend an event in Ankara for Democracy and National Unity Day, commemorating the July 15 coup attempt in 2016. (0700 GMT)

ENERGY MINISTER

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar will meet with Oman’s Minister of Energy and Mines Salim Nasser Al Aufi in Oman.
