Turkey – Factors to watch on August 22


Here are news, reports and events that may affect Turkish financial markets on Friday.

The lira USDTRY traded at record low of 41.0150 against the U.S. dollar at 0432 GMT, after closing at 40.9275 on Thursday.

The main BIST 100 share index XU100 closed 1.61% higher at 11,313.90 points on Thursday.

GLOBAL MARKETS

Stocks in Asia edged higher in a shaky start on Friday as anxious traders awaited a speech from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell at the annual Jackson Hole symposium.

VICE PRESIDENT

Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz will hold a joint press conference with the Prime Minister of the breakaway Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in Nicosia.

TRANSPORT MINISTER

Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu will attend a groundbreaking ceremony for a railway line between eastern province of the Kars and neighbouring province of Igdir’s Dilucu district, which is near the border of Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan exclave (0800 GMT).

TRADE MINISTER

Trade Minister Omer Bolat will attend a meeting with businesspeople and representatives of non-governmental organisations in the southeastern province of Siirt (1130 GMT).

OPPOSITION

Main opposition CHP leader will attend his party’s rally in the eastern province of Sivas (1500 GMT).

FOREIGN ARRIVALS DATA (TRTARR=ECI)

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism will publish data on the number of foreigners entering Turkey in July (0800 GMT).

ISRAEL TRADE

Turkish port authorities have begun informally requiring shipping agents to provide letters declaring that vessels are not linked to Israel and not carrying military or hazardous cargo bound for the country, according to two shipping sources.
