Turkey – Factors to watch on Aug 27

Here are news, reports and events that may affect Turkish financial markets on Wednesday.

The lira USDTRY was quoted at 41.0440 against the U.S. dollar at 0445 GMT, compared with a close of 40.0345 on Tuesday.

The main BIST 100 share index XU100 closed 0.45% higher at 11,529.81 points on Tuesday.

GLOBAL MARKETS

Asian stocks were steady on Wednesday ahead of an earnings report from AI leader Nvidia NVDA that will shape near-term risk sentiment, while the U.S. dollar was frail as investors remained nervous about attacks on Federal Reserve autonomy.

ERDOGAN PROGRAMME

President Tayyip Erdogan will attend a ceremony at defence firm ASELSAN for the delivery of components for Turkey’s “Steel Dome” air defence system, for the opening of new facilities, and the foundation-laying of ASELSAN’s new technology facility. He will later attend the graduation ceremony of the Gendarme and Coast Guard Academy. (1330 GMT) (1530 GMT)

VICE PRESIDENT

Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz will participate in the monthly meeting of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry. (1200 GMT)

TRADE MINISTER

Trade Minister Omer Bolat will meet his Syrian counterpart in Damascus and participate in the 62nd Damascus International Forum. (1215 GMT) (1630 GMT)

PARLIAMENT COMMISSION

Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus will chair a meeting of the National Solidarity, Fraternity and Democracy Commission in parliament which was established as part of a process of ending the decades-old Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) insurgency (1100 GMT).

OPPOSITION

Ozgur Ozel, head of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), will hold a rally in Istanbul’s Beyoglu district. (1730 GMT)

SUNFLOWER OIL IMPORTS

Turkey lowered the tariff for raw sunflower oil imports from 36% to 30% and extended a window for reduced tariff sunflower seed imports, according to a decree published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday.

UKRAINE PEACE TALKS

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Tuesday that Turkey, the Gulf States or European countries could host any talks he may hold with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
