Turkey could vote Thursday on admitting U.S. troops
"We are analyzing the situation and we will see what happens in the next few days," Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said Monday.
He will be out of the country at a conference until Wednesday, which means there can’t be a vote until Thursday. However, several Turkish newspapers reported that there won’t be a vote until after byelections set for Sunday. The Turkish stock market crashed Monday, as expected, because of Saturday’s vote. If the U.S. troops had been allowed in, America would have helped Turkey with $15 billion in grants and loans to compensate for any war-related losses. The stock market was counting on the money to bolster Turkey’s weak economy. It fell by about 10 per cent Monday morning.
