Turkey and TRNC demand same changes in Annan plan

Denktas told reporters that it was not meaningful to start a discussion on whether or not Annan plan was on the table.

"Annan plan is on the table. Some say changes have been made in the plan. But, we haven’t seen these changes. We will altogether see if these amendments to the plan will change the name, spirit, psychology or policy of Annan plan. Turkey wants changes to settle the Cyprus issue. I have also said what I want. I think there aren’t any differences between what I and Turkey want. Make these changes to Annan plan and see whether or not Greek Cypriots accept them. We will see the developments," Denktas said.

Denktas noted that "if an agreement was to be reached and if concessions would be made of territory, Turkish Cypriot villagers would again be in the position of migrants." He stated that "it was impossible for them to accept such a thing."

TRNC President Denktas asked his people not to worry, be calm and continue their resistance because they will settle the issue.

Stating that acts continued to end TRNC, which was recognized by Turkey, Denktas said that "those act were carried out with contributions of the United States and Britain and United Nations (U.N.) Secretariat General either intentionally or unintentionally."

Denktas said, "the U.N., which doesn’t recognize a state formed by will of a nation after this nation saved itself from massacres and mass graves, and those who insist on not recognizing this state cause a disgrace for history and freedom of people. And, they are doing this to serve Greek Cypriot people, the Greeks and themselves. They deny free will of a nation."

The world forced Turkey, which recognized TRNC, to give up recognizing TRNC, Denktas pointed out.

Noting that Turkey was attacked from every side, Denktas said that Cyprus issue was used as a trump in those attacks.

Denktas stated that the Greek Cypriots said that they were an indispensable part of Greece and they did not have any complaints abut that.

Turkish Cypriots were also an indispensable part of Turkey, Denktas said.

Denktas said, "we are Turks. That is, there are two nations on the island and we want an agreement based on principle of existence of these two nations."

It was impossible to create one nation from two nations, Denktas stated.

Denktas noted that it was Annan plan which foresaw creation of one nation from two nations.

A partnership could be formed in Cyprus in case everybody accepted that Turkish Cypriot people were indispensable part of Turkey, Denktas emphasized.

Denktas stated that "Turkish-Greek partnership" could be formed there.

"Turkish Cypriot people showed its will and protected its state and sovereignty," Denktas said.

Denktas noted that TRNC and Turkey would walk on the path before them determinedly.

Reiterating that he wanted formation of a broad-based government in TRNC, Denktas said that TRNC people wanted "not only compromise and European Union (EU) accession, but also protection of their state and sovereignty and continuation of Turkey’s guarantor state status."

Denktas noted that this message of Turkish Cypriot people should be well-understood by the world and EU.

Stressing that May 1 was not the end of the road, Denktas said, "if they were good-willed, they would have given a synchronous negotiation date for Turkey’s and Cyprus’ membership. Thus, they would not have caused an unbalanced situation. This cause will be won by those who are patient, who stand on their feet and who say that he/she is a Turk and an indispensable part of Turkey."

Denktas stated that Turkish soldiers should continue to stay in Cyprus after Turkey entered EU.

TRNC President Denktas emphasized that 1960 treaties gave Turkey the right to deploy soldiers on the island permanently and nobody could change that status except relevant sides.

Denktas said that "Turkish soldiers should continue to stay on Cyprus as British bases would continue to exist on the island."

There was an intrigue aiming to end Turkey’s guarantor state status and strategic rights, Denktas stressed.

Denktas added that Turkey was resisting to that intrigue and would continue to do so.
