Trump administration deploys AI tool to slash half of federal regulations by 2026: Report

The US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool aimed at eliminating half of all federal regulations by January 2026, according to internal documents obtained by The Washington Post and confirmed by multiple officials.
Dubbed the “DOGE AI Deregulation Decision Tool,” the system is designed to review roughly 200,000 rules and recommend cuts to the estimated 100,000 deemed no longer required by law.
The tool has already completed regulatory reviews at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, according to The Washington Post.
“This is a major effort,” read an internal HUD email, adding that DOGE is working with lawyers to “simplify the [Administrative Procedure Act] process … use AI for drafting, and use AI for complying with notices in the future.”
The AI project stems from an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Jan. 31, requiring agencies to repeal 10 regulations for every new one issued.
“All options are being explored,” White House spokesman Harrison Fields said in an email to the newspaper, while cautioning the initiative remains in its early stages. “The DOGE experts creating these plans are the best and brightest in the business.”
Critics, however, have raised concerns over the accuracy and legality of using AI in such sweeping decisions. One HUD staffer told The Washington Post that the tool misread statutes in several cases: “Actually, no—the AI read the language wrong, and it is actually correct.”
Former DOGE legal chief James Burnham defended the strategy, writing: “Creative deployment of artificial intelligence to advance the president’s regulatory agenda is one logical strategy to make significant progress in that finite amount of time.”
Despite internal skepticism and legal questions, the Trump administration plans to expand the tool across all federal agencies in the coming months, with a stated goal to “Relaunch America on Jan. 20, 2026.”
