TRNC PM Talat sends a letter to Annan

Lefkosa (AA) – In his letter, Prime Minister Talat said on Friday, "Turkish Cypriot people have fulfilled their responsibilities to find a solution to the Cyprus issue. Now, we expect you to call on all member countries to lift isolation against Turkish Cypriot people by taking into consideration the results of April 24’s referendum on the island."

"Now, it is time to declare the whole world that the Greek Cypriot side does not represent the Turkish Cypriot people. We appreciate Mr. Annan’s efforts and impartial attitude to find a fair and lasting solution to the Cyprus issue," he stressed.

Referring to difficulties of the Turkish Cypriot people because of the unfair isolation imposed by the international community, Prime Minister Talat asked United Nations Secretary General Annan to call on all member countries to put an end to the isolation in his report.

"Such an initiative will make a historic contribution to efforts to find a comprehensive solution in the future. In that case, Turkish Cypriot people will start relying on the international community once again," he said.

Talat highlighted importance of positive mission to be undertaken by the EU in regard to efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus issue and aid to be given to both sides on the island.

"If Mr. Annan makes a direct reference to the EU to encourage a more constructive attitude towards the Turkish Cypriot side in his report, the EU will have been convinced to play a more positive role in putting an end to the isolation against the Turkish Cypriot people," Talat added.
