TRNC Parliament Rejects Early Elections

Talat reminded that even with the votes of the National Unity Party and Peace and Democracy Party, the motion of no-confidence was unable to reach the required majority to be passed. Therefore, whether or not the government will resign is a decision that the government would have to make for itself.

"The attempts are in vain. This government will not resign. Reach [a Parliamentary majority of] 26 and set up the government. We will never object to it," Talat declared.

Meanwhile, TRNC Economy and Tourism Minister Ayse Donmezer resigned from office. Donmezer disclosed that Foreign Minister Serdar Denktas requested her resignation.

Denktas indicated that Donmezer was removed from her position because of "general disharmony". Donmezer had served as a government official in Turkey for many years before being one of three ministers that the Democrat Party assigned from abroad.

After yesterday’s (July 29) meeting, the TRNC Republican Parliament began their summer recess. Parliament will be back in session on September 13.
