TRNC Looks for its Government

TRNC President Rauf Denktas called upon the Nicosia RTP deputy to establish a government and seek a solution on the divided island.

The RTP asked the National Unification Party (NUP) to join a coalition government and the NUP responded to the offer with a seven-page letter.

RTP leader Mehmet Ali Talat answered journalists’ questions before heading to a party meeting to evaluate the NUP response.

Talat said that they did not receive any concrete responses to the questions they had asked the NUP.

The NUP did not answer to overtures asking if a government could be established and come up with a solution to the Cyprus problem based on the Annan Plan by May 2004 – the date when Greek Cyprus will join the European Union (EU).

Talat said that the questions, "Do you prefer to establish a government under the presidency of the RTP?" and, "Do you prefer to have President Rauf Denktas conclude his negotiations?" have not been answered yet.
