Talat evaluates latest developments on Cyprus talks

Speaking to Greek and Turkish reporters, he evaluated the latest developments on unification progress of the island. "As you observed, Mr. Denktas declared he would not go to Switzerland. We are discussing the matter in the Turkish Cypriot community. The present situation is not clear; it’s a bit elusive. But the process is going. It’s an irreversible process. We have to prepare the ground and everything to our people to convince them to be positive."

He touched on the problems affecting peace process as saying, "Everybody has difficulties. But we are trying to resolve seriously and proceed to a solution. And, of course, our people will decide at the end."

Upon a question of Denktash’s decision, "You mean the withdrawal of Mr. Denktash. For the UN, they were also surprised. They are aware of the fact that this might create huge obstacle for the negotiations. So they weren’t pleased. But, of course, we have to digest almost everything in this process, in this track… I’m not completely hopeless that he may re-think about his decision."

When a reporter asked whether he would be in Switzerland’s meetings held, he said, "I’m always there… Mr. Denktas said he wouldn’t participate in the meetings in Switzerland. He is not withdrawing from the negotiations."

He concluded his words as adding, "We have difficulties on that matter for the time being. We are still assessing the matter. Let’s not go further for the time being. We have to do something, we know that. We are trying to find a break through for that."
