Sudanese army recaptures Abu Quta in northern Al-Jazirah State
KHARTOUM, Sudan
The Sudanese army announced Friday it regained control of Abu Quta in northwestern Al-Jazirah State from the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) amid more advancements in other areas in Khartoum State.
“With God’s help, our armed forces and supporting units successfully cleared Abu Quta town in Al-Jazirah State of militia forces (RSF) on Friday,” spokesperson, Nabil Abdullah said in a statement.
He added that the army also liberated areas in the East Nile district of the Khartoum State, as well as the Kafouri neighborhood in eastern Khartoum’s Bahri City from the RSF.
With the new advances, the army has secured all cities and towns in Al-Jazirah State, except for Giad in the north and surrounding villages located 50 kilometers north of Khartoum.
The army announced Thursday that it had regained control of the towns of al-Maseed, al-Nuba and al-Tayyi in Al-Jazirah State from the RSF militia.
The military declared Jan. 11 its entry into Wad Madani, the capital city of Al-Jazirah, nearly one year after losing it to the RSF.
RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, later acknowledged the loss of Wad Madani, but described it as “a temporary setback, not a defeat in the broader conflict.”
The army and RSF have been fighting a war since mid-April 2023 that has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced 14 million, according to the UN and local authorities. Research from US universities, however, estimates the death toll at around 130,000.
International and UN calls to end the war are mounting, warning of an impending humanitarian catastrophe as millions face famine and death due to food shortages.
The conflict has spread to 13 of Sudan’s 18 states.
