Sharon and Abbas Ready for Peace Talks

Sharon said Israel will negotiate at any time with the Palestinian authorities, but stressed that negotiations will depend upon the Palestinian administration’s efforts to end terrorism and provocation. Sharon said there is a new window of opportunity. Abbas also said "We are ready to negotiate with Sharon at any time." Abbas described the post-Arafat atmosphere in Palestine as an opportunity for both the regional and the international communities, adding, "If we miss that opportunity, there will be no one to blame but ourselves."

Sharon signaled his intention to coordinate the withdrawal plan with the new Palestinian administration if they gain control of the withdrawal regions.

Abbas is leading the presidential race according to public polls. The State Information Service, a government institution, says Abbas has gained 41 percent of the votes.
