Sanchez Orchestrated Torture Tactics in Iraq
In an information memo, reportedly, prepared by General Sanchez in September 2003 and seized by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the techniques to be used during the interrogations of Iraqi prisoners were mentioned. According to the memo, most of the techniques such as shouting at or continually agitating the prisoners are listed among the methods applied. Soldiers were authorized to use dogs during the interrogations in order to exploit Arabs’ phobia of dogs. Switching on and off the lights, defined as "light control", and prisoners were held under pressure in various positions and using different methods; however, the ACLU emphasizes that all these techniques are illegal and supports that Sanchez should be held responsible for the bad treatment and torture.
Meanwhile, the number of Iraqi prisoners has reportedly doubled since October and has reached 10,500. About 100 of the prisoners are below 18 years of age.
