Report blames engineer for train accident

In a report issued late Thursday, the investigators said the engineer of the Ankara-Istanbul Baskent Express ignored a red signal, leading his train to plough into the oncoming Adapazari Express.
A study of the speed monitors of the two trains showed the Baskent Express had been travelling at 82.5 km per hour while the Adapazari Express had been travelling at 10 km per hour at the time of the accident
When first interviewed in hospital by the investigators, engineer Hasab Yucedag said the signal light was green when Baskent Express passed it and was red for the Adapazari Express. He also said that they were travelling at 100 to 110 km per hour and once the light began to change he slowed down.
However, the incident revealed that the train used for the Baskent Express, which had been rented from Bosnia Hergovina, did not have an automatic speed reduction system that would prevent an accident in the event of a red warning signal being passed.
The three person team of experts looking into the cause of the crash have said that their investigation is continuing.
