Rectors voice concerns to president

Middle East Technical University Rector Prof. Dr. Ural Akbulut, Ankara University Rector Prof. Dr. Nusret Aras, Hacettepe University Rector Prof. Dr. Tuncalp Ozgen, Gazi University Rector Riza Ayhan attended the meeting at the Presidential Office.

The rectors expressed their concerns about the possibile politicising of universities after the bill in its existing form becomes law. The rectors stated that with the bill, the National Education Ministry and Higher Education Board would become functionally "dependent" institutions. They also stated that the article envisaging the rectors of new universities be selected by the prime minister is an important step in the politicising of universities and the universities needed, especially, financial autonomy.
