Rahsan Hanim Complains about Amnesty Law

After claims that former True Path Party (DYP) Sanliurfa deputy Sedat Bucak, who was judged in the Susurluk case, had gained amnesty, the press reported that "The Law of Conditional Releasing and Postponement of the Crimes" was brought about by Rahsan Ecevit. In a written statement on the subject yesterday, Madam Rahsan stated that never having been a minister or deputy, she did not have a signature under any law proposal. Ecevit said in summary:

"Despite this, blame about unfair use of amnesty is persistently attributed to me by some people. I only wished for the release of those poor people who were sentenced to long years because of unimportant reasons, and for the release of children sentenced to prison for years for stealing, for example, some pasty from a pastry shop. I did not want amnesty for savage murderers, or those robbing the state or for committing crime against the state or for rapists. On the contrary, I am opposed to people like this benefiting from amnesty. The amnesty law has passed into different hands, and details have been changed. It has been brought into a condition that I did not think of, that has no connection to me."
