Professor will speak on Turkey’s place in the Islamic world

AAUW’s annual Math-Science Conference for 600 eighth-grade girls is Thursday, Jan. 9, at the University of Redlands. Some two dozen area women, prominent in their career fields related to math and science, will share experiences and stress the need for the young women to begin their math and science track by ninth grade.
AAUW features several special-interest groups who meet monthly, with the Great Decisions Group chaired by Mary Jane Auerbacher beginning in February. Study books are $13.50, with sessions meeting each Wednesday at 7 p.m. or Friday afternoons at 2. The eight topics are Unilateralism vs. Multilaterism; Afghanistan; Saudi Arabia; Nigeria; International Food Policy; China; European Union; and Women and Human Rights. For information, call 792-8546.
LeOra Mudge will speak on Uganda for the Tuesday, Jan. 14, meeting of the International Relations Group. She and her husband, Ken, an orthopedic surgeon, spent six weeks there last year. Grace Hart will speak about interesting places in her home state of South Dakota when the "Where in the World?" travel group meets Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. at the home of Janice Belden on Garden Street. This is a new meeting date for the group, on the third Thursday.
The Play Reading group will read through Neil Simon’s "I Ought to be in Pictures" Monday, Jan. 20, at the home of Marcia Pifer.
"Reading and the Rainbow" book and film discussion group meets Thursday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. at the home of Mary Stewart to discuss Donna Woolfolk Cross’ novel "Pope Joan."
The AAUW San Gorgonio Pass Interest Group meets Jan. 8 and 13 to prepare for their Math-Science conference for Pass Area eighth-grade girls, which will take place Friday, Jan. 17, at Mount San Jacinto College.
Jane Dill is featured Wednesday, Jan. 22, when the "I Am, Therefore I Think" brown- bag lunch group meets at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 22, in Room 6 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 419 S. Fourth St., Redlands The theme this year is "I’ve Always Wanted to Learn " with each speaker selecting her own topic.
AAUW’s California Cuisine and Conversation dinner will be Sunday, Jan. 5, at 6 p.m. at the home of Evelyn and Bernie O’Prey. Call 793-1989 for reservations and a food assignment. Members then bring copies of the recipe to share.
