President of Turkey’s Olympic committee, dies.

Erdem, a former captain and coach of Turkey’s national volleyball team, oversaw Istanbul’s unsuccessful bids for the 2000, 2004, and 2008 Games. Istanbul is also a candidate to host the 2012 Summer Games.

Erdem’s body was scheduled to return to Turkey on Friday and a funeral is expected to be held over the weekend, Olympic officials said. Erdem is survived by his wife, two children and three grandchildren.
