Powell: US still wants Turkish troops in Iraq
Speaking after a two day visit to Iraq, Powell said that the US would work to ensure that objections by Kurdish politicians to Turkey sending troops would be removed.
“There are, let me put this delicately, serious sensitivities associated with Turkish troops,” Powell said at a press conference in Kuwait. “Nevertheless we are going to continue to discuss it. I asked them today to have an open mind about it.”
While acknowledging that Iraqi Kurds are sensitive to a Turkish military presence in Iraq, Powell said that the US had to overcome these concerns.
“There are serious sensitivities associated with Turkish troops,” he said. “Nevertheless we are going to continue to discuss, and I asked them today to have an open mind about it.”
