Polish vote in favor of Turkey
“The membership negotiations with Turkey should start at once,” Warsaw said in the statement. The Polish government said it also supported starting membership negotiations with Croatia next year.
Poland, however, was open to an option of starting negotiations with Turkey and Croatia in the second half of next year, the statement said. It listed reasons that could lead to a kind of delay such as:
“The Political situation of EU member countries, high level of ongoing discussions over Turkey’s EU membership and the approval process of the EU Constitution.”
Poland joined the EU in May with nine other countries as a part of the latest enlargement wave of the union. European leaders are to decide on Dec. 17 whether to start long-delayed accession talks with Turkey.
Ankara expects a clear date for it to start membership talks from Brussels, while Brussels is increasing the pressure on Ankara to settle the long-running Cyprus problem ahead of the bloc’s Dec. 17 summit.
Ankara says it has fulfilled the Copenhagen criteria, the only condition required to start accession talks. In addition, the EU Commission confirmed Turkey’s readiness for negotiations on Oct.6.
