‘PKK Have Stinger and SA-7 Missiles’
These missiles, known as ‘Manpads’ (Man Portable Air Defence System), present a serious threat when in the wrong hands. Experts decry that they are unsure of just who may actually possess these types of weapons and how many exist outside the hands of government.
Last year, terrorists had shot at an Israel airplane as it took off from Kenya’s Mombassa Airport using one of these missiles; but they did not hit the target. Experts estimate that planes equipped with antimissile systems could cost billions of dollars.
According to the New York Times, some terrorist organizations and armed groups thought to possess these missiles are: PKK-KADEK (Turkey), Armed Islamic Group (Algeria), Al-Qaida (Southeast Asia and Middle East), Taliban (Afghanistan and Pakistan), Hezbollah (Lebanon), Chechnya groups (Russia), rebel groups in the Congo, Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), National Salvation Army (Colombia), National Unity for Angola’s Independence (Angola).
