Pipe bomb explodes near police department in Istanbul

ISTANBUL (AA) – Police captured early on Wednesday a person whose fingers were dismembered when a bomb he was carrying exploded near the Police Station in Beyoglu district of Istanbul and escaped from the scene after explosion late on Tuesday.

In their investigation into the explosion which happened at night near the police station, police officers found three dismembered fingers in the scene of explosion.

As a result of the investigation, police found out that 21-year-old Lokman Aslan was brought to a private hospital in Okmeydani district as his fingers were ripped off.

Sources said that an automobile left Aslan who was said to have accepted that "a bomb he was carrying exploded" to the hospital.

Aslan who was later transferred to another hospital in Sisli district was also suffering injuries in the neck, sources added.

Police officers said that suspect Aslan had lost much blood and investigation was under way.
