Parliament to investigate Ciller and Karayalcin

Working for the past four months on the corruption allegations regarding the project, the committee decided to demand an investigation committee thanks to AK Party members despite the opposition of CHP deputies. The committee also decided to file a complaint against eleven former bureaucrats.

The committee will present Parliament a motion demanding investigation committees. The committees can only be set up when Parliament approves the motion at a secret ballot. In case the investigation committee finds these former prime minister and ministers guilty after working for four months, it will demand Parliament to send them to Supreme Court. An absolute majority, at least 276 votes are required to send these former ministers to Supreme Court.

The committee probing the Izmit Urban Water Supply Project said in its report that Yuvacik Dam, which was estimated to cost $210 million, cost $900 million, thus making the state incur losses.

Yuvacik Dam was constructed during the office of Sefa Sirmen as Izmit Mayor. Sirmen is now a deputy for CHP. The committee was set up upon AKP Kocaeli Deputy and Forestry Minister Osman Pepe and Sirmen himself.

The committee demanded an investigation into Ciller, who was the prime minister at the time of the DYP-SHP coalition between 1991 and 1995, Karayalcin, who was the deputy prime minister in this coalition, and ministers who signed the concerned decisions of the High Planning Board. Necmettin Cevheri, Aykon Dogan, Ismet Atilla, Ekrem Ceyhun, Veysel Atasoy, U*censored* Soylemez, Halil Culhaoglu, Mehmet Donen and Mustafa Yilmaz are these former ministers.

The committee also decided to file a complaint against 11 bureaucrats including the period’s treasury undersecretary Ayfer Yilmaz, Istanbul Stock Exchange Chairman Osman Birsen, Customs Undersecretary Nevzat Saygilioglu and deputy treasury undersecretaries Aydin Karaoz and Osman Ataman.
