Papadopulos Losing Hope for a Conclusion

The Greek-Cypriot leader, Tasos Papadopoulos said that he did not expect a solution in the newest round of negotiations. After he announced that he would go to New York, Papadopoulos emphasized, " The real attitude of Turkish side will be clear at the negotiation table and in this context we will keep being prudent." The U.S. and England continue to encourage both sides for a solution, and the Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen Association (TUSIAD) declared that the Annan invitation to discuss Cyprus should be considered as a historical occasion and should be accepted as early as possible. There are some reservations being voiced by the opposition in the Cabinet. Democratic Left Party (DSP) Leader Bulent Ecevit said, "Annan overstepped his authority by trying to impose conditions on the TRNC." Ecevit added that it would be political suicide for TRNC and Turkish Republic to accept Annan’s plan.
