One day recess to Cyprus talks
LEFKOSA (AA) – U.N. Spokesmanship in Cyprus said U.N. Secretary General’s Cyprus Special Envoy Alvaro de Soto did not have a scheduled meeting with President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos.
U.N. last Friday announced that format of Cyprus talks, which started on February 19, was shifted. It said indirect talks would take place from now on. The U.N. statement said the sides would not have a direct meeting unless necessary.
Denktas met with de Soto on Monday. TRNC Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat and Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktas also joined the meeting.
Meanwhile, it was reported that United Nations (U.N.) Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast will come to Cyprus to meet with both sides and to get information from de Soto about the recent situation.
Prendergast will have separate meetings with Denktas and Papadopoulos.
Denktas will receive Prendergast at 20.00 local time on Wednesday.
Prendergast had visited the island on March 2 and met with the leaders separately. He later returned to New York and presented a report to U.N. Secretary General.
