‘Obstinacy Law’ Passed
115 AKP deputies did not attend the final voting. The party tends to send it once more to the President for approval, in case he vetoed it.
With the new YOK law, the way opened for the graduates of Preachers’ Schools to become district governors, doctors and engineers. Today, the law was sent to President Sezer who has 15 days either to ratify or veto it.
The law changes the structure of YOK, ends the distinction between the general assembly and executive board of YOK, turning it into a single board in permanent status. The law reduces the number of YOK members from 22 to 16. The YOK bill regulates entering universities and terminates the coefficient differences among regular and vocational schools.
The 6 joint articles rule that lecturers will not be deprived of their academic titles by the ethic commissions established by Inter-University Board.
The YOK bill was approved by the General Assembly after a 17-hour meeting. CHP tried to block the motion by exercising all its rights under the internal regulations. Deputies of CHP talked over every article, asked questions and gave a motion.
