No plans for new Turkey vote on US troops: official

Iraq reaction
Meanwhile, a senior Iraqi official has hailed the Turkish parliament’s rejection of a motion to allow the deployment of 62,000 US soldiers in Turkey for a possible attack on Baghdad. "We hail this decision and hope that the Turkish Parliament will maintain its position," Salem al-Qubaissi, head of the Iraqi parliament’s committee for Arab and international affairs, said.
The Turkish Parliament’s vote "would help strengthen good relations between the Iraqi and Turkish people, who are tied by history, and serve the interests of Turkey," Mr Qubaissi said, also a member of the ruling Baath Party. The controversial government request to allow 62,000 US soldiers to deploy on Turkish soil for six months fell just three votes short on Saturday.
Of the 533 MPs present in the closed-door session of the assembly, 264 voted in favour of the motion, while 250 voted against and 19 abstained.
The motion needed the backing of half the MPs present, or 267 votes, to be approved.
