New Lebanese government non-partisan, to serve Lebanon: President

BEIRUT

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun confirmed Saturday that members of the new government are not affiliated with political parties and will work to serve all Lebanese to achieve the country’s interests.

Aoun expressed satisfaction with the formation of the government, congratulating its head, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, and the ministers, wishing them success in their new roles.

He pointed out that the formation of the “Reform and Rescue Government” was based on the criteria agreed upon with Salam.

“One of the most important of these criteria is that the government does not include ministers affiliated with political parties,” said Aoun.

He highlighted that the selection of ministers was based on “competence, experience, and specialization, in addition to their good reputation.”

He added that the criteria were meant to ensure that government members “are cohesive, united, and work as a strong team to achieve the hopes placed on them by the Lebanese for a better tomorrow.”

Aoun reiterated that “government members are non-partisan, and they will undoubtedly serve all Lebanese because their goal is only the interest of Lebanon.”

Aoun signed a decree for the formation of the new government earlier Saturday, which includes 24 ministers, including Salam.

Aoun was elected president on Jan. 9, ending more than two years of a presidential vacuum in Lebanon due to political disagreements.

Days after his election, Aoun invited Salam, a judge with the International Court of Justice, to form a new government.
