Musharraf okays promotion of 26 brigadiers

The Army Selection Board, which met at the General Headquarters with COAS General Musharraf in the chair, found these 26 Brigadiers out of 119 cases considered for this purpose, fit for promotion.

The promoted brigadiers, include Defence Attache to the USA (Brigadier Shafqat Ahmed of the Punjab Regiment), Defence Attache to Iran (Brig Zahid Mubashir Shaikh of Artillery) and Defence Attache to Russia (Brig Gul Muhammad of the Frontier Force Regiment). The list also included the name of Prime Minister’s Military Secretary Brig Tahir Mehmood Malik and some Chiefs of Staff currently posted in Multan, Quetta, and Mangla.

The 119 contestants for promotion reached the rank of brigadier out of the batch of 805 officers who were granted Commission during 1975 to 1976. The Army officials had to undergo stringent promotion criterion comprising various courses, promotion examination, exhibited performance and earlier selection boards.

Those officers recommended for promotion are: Brig Mian Nadeem Ijaz Ahmed (Armoured Corps), Brig Waheed Arshad Chaudhry (Armoured Corps – Director Military Operations), Brig Ather Abbas (Armoured Corps), Brig Zahid Mubashir Sheikh (Artillery — Pakistan’s Defence Attache in Iran), Brig Syed Ithar Hussain Shah (Artillery), Brigadier Liaqat Ali (Artillery — Kharian Brigade Commander), Brig Wajahat Ali Mufti (Artillery — Sialkot Brigade Commander), Brig Tahir Ali (Air Defence), Brig Imtiaz Ahmed (Engineers), Brig Hamid Mahmud (Signals), Brig Shafaqaat Ahmed (Punjab Regt. — Pakistan’s Defence Attache in the USA), Brig Asif Yasin Malik (Punjab Regt.
