Major shipment of aid from Turkey to Iraq
On March 29, three trucks with dried milk from the World Food Program crossed the border. It was the first aid delivery since the start of the war. The trucks drove from Gaziantep, Turkey, where a World Food Program warehouse is located.
The Turkish border with Iraq has been effectively closed since the start of the war, preventing humanitarian aid from crossing the border.
The Turkish government closed the border to aid and refugees, hoping to prevent a repeat of the humanitarian disaster after the 1991 Persian Gulf War.
According to Heather Hill, of the World Food Program, the hope is that this shipment will be the first of many and that there will be a steady flow of aid across the border to help Iraqi civilians impacted by the war.
