Limited support for Turkey’s EU bid from Germans

The poll, conducted for the German newspaper Die Welt by the TNS Emnid agency, showed that 60 percent of respondents favoured Turkey being given no more than a privileged partnership with the EU, rather than full membership. Another 22 percent of the 500 people surveyed said that they wanted no direct ties between the bloc and Turkey at all.
The results of the poll are at odds with the stated policy of the government of Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, which strongly supports Turkey’s bid.
