Leader of Canadian opposition party calls for ban on Trump at G7 summit
HAMILTON, Canada
The leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) called Wednesday for US President Donald Trump to be barred from attending an upcoming G7 summit in the country, citing threats to democracy, sovereignty and global stability.
“We need to ban Donald Trump from attending the G7 summit. Donald Trump should not be welcomed here,” Jagmeet Singh said during a speech on foreign affairs and international cooperation at the Conseil des Relations Internationales de Montréal (CORIM).
Canada assumed the presidency of the G7 for this year and will host the annual leaders’ summit in Kananaskis, Alberta in 2025.
The G7 includes Canada, the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.
Emphasizing that Canada must take a firm stance on Trump’s participation, he said: “Why would we invite someone who has threatened our very democracy, very sovereignty?”
“Why would we invite someone who has threatened our economic well-being? Why would we invite someone who threatens allies and threatens the world’s stability? Why would we allow a convicted criminal into our country?”
Singh argued that Trump’s actions and policies have undermined multilateral organizations and urged Canadian officials to “use the G7 summit as an opportunity to work with our allies on a plan to resist Donald Trump and his dangerous threats to the world.”
He further commented on Trump’s actions in the month after he took office and said “we are seeing a reshaping of the global order and a less safe and stable world.”
“In less than a month, he cozied up to dictators like (Russian President) Vladimir Putin while calling our ally (Ukrainian) President (Volodymyr) Zelenskyy a dictator. What do you call a guy who threatens his allies, including with the use of military force, spreads disinformation, proclaims he is above the law and fires anyone who won’t do what he says – even those in law enforcement and the military? A fascist,” he said.
A petition calling on the Canadian government to ban Trump from entering Canada on the grounds of criminality, security risks and ongoing threats to the country’s sovereignty and economic well-being has already collected over 32,200 signatures.
