Kurd-Arab War After Soccer Match
Local soures said that death toll might increase over 100 in the clashes taking place during the funerals.
Clashes in the stadium started when armed Arabs supporting the Baath Party arrived with pictures of Saddam Hussein, chanting slogans, "Long Live Saddam!" and "Death to Kurds!" and Kurds started chanting slogans for Barzani. The two groups threw seats at each other while Arabs opened fire to Kurds.
18 people were killed and 120 people were wounded in the stadium, of gun fire and congestion. The unrest spread to Syrian capital Damacus where hundreds of Kurd destroyed the statute of Hafez Essad and arson raids were made on numerous public offices. Kurds hoisted their flags on streets and the local police sought the help of the army, to quell the unrest.
As four policemen are reported killed in clashes, at least 100 people were also killed. Turkish businessmen in Kamisli fled the site and returned to Turkey.
Mardin’s Governor Temel Kocaklar and Brigade Commander General Kisacik carried out observations in the border and offered medical help to Syrian border Commander Hasin Ismail.
