KKTC rules out new talks on Annan plan
The statement was a response to remarks by Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos, published Sunday in a Greek Cypriot newspaper, that he was ready to re-negotiate the plan and had sent letters containing Greek Cypriot proposals for changing certain provisions of the plan.
Turkish Cypriots voted in favor of the plan in an April 24 referendum, but the plan failed due to an overwhelming objection from the Greek Cypriot side. Cyprus joined the European Union on May 1, but membership benefits de facto applied only to the Greek Cypriot side.
The statement from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ (KKTC) Foreign Ministry said the vote was a clear indication that Greek Cypriots did not want a solution based on a share of authority and therefore the Annan plan.
"Turkish Cypriot people said their final words by saying ‘yes’ to the Annan plan. The plan’s process has been completed, and it is no longer open to further discussion or change," said the Turkish Cypriot Foreign Ministry statement.
"Therefore, attempts on the part of either Tassos Papadopoulos or any third party to change the Annan plan are unacceptable to us," the statement concluded.
