Karamanlis Fails to Secure Bush’s Cyprus Support

Karamanlis said that the Greek administration did not think some parts of the Annan Plan were balanced; therefore he wanted to renegotiate those points in his meeting with Bush. The American administration maintained that a new fact was revealed by the referenda and that the Greek side should accept this.

Bush hinted that the Cypriot Turkish side should be supported with his message, "the Annan Plan is clear and the Cypriot Greeks should accept that." An official from the U.S. State Department said that there was not a ‘better’ plan.
