Journalist Claims Saddam’s Son was Planning Coup
Arnett published a statement in the April issue of Playboy magazine, which said Uday was planning to overthrow his father, the man that had controlled Iraq for 35 years, and that Uday succeeded in gaining the support of Saddam’s militia.
During 18 months of research, Arnett was able to penetrate Uday’s inner circle and collected information. He said he obtained a letter, written by Saddam’s militia commander General Meki Humudat dated 26 March 2003, which, according to Arnett, expressed loyalty to a new government to be formed by Uday Hussein.
Uday had planned to make a late announcement that Saddam’s power had been toppled, but his plans failed when US forces bombarded a television studio in Bagdat belonging to him, added Arnett.
Uday was killed along with his brother Kusay in July of 2003 in Musul (Mosul) during a US air bombardment.
Renowned war correspondent Peter Arnett was fired by the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) for criticizing the actions of the US army during its occupation of Iraq.
