‘It should be controversial’ to be silent about the suffering of Gaza’s children: Kids content creator

ISTANBUL

Popular US children’s content creator Ms. Rachel on Monday defended her advocacy for Gaza’s children, saying that in fact being silent about their suffering is what should be considered controversial.

Speaking with British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan about her decision to speak out on Gaza, the educator expressed concern about the expectation to remain silent: “I think it should be controversial to not say anything.”

Ms. Rachel, the stage name for Rachel Griffin Accurso, decried how advocating for children in crisis situations has been met with opposition. She questioned why people “try to make it controversial when you speak out for children that are facing immeasurable suffering.”

The content creator rejected suggestions that showing concern for Gaza’s children indicates a lack of care for others, arguing this perspective is fundamentally flawed.

“Our compassion doesn’t have boundaries, our borders. We just love kids,” Ms. Rachel explained.

The educator, who boasts 14 million YouTube subscribers and 2.9 million Instagram followers, said remaining quiet on the humanitarian crisis was not an option. “Silence wasn’t a choice for me,” she said on facing pressure to stay silent.

The children’s educator has used her substantial platform to raise awareness about the situation in Gaza, where nearly 53,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, been killed by Israel since October 2023.

Recently, a New York-based pro-Israel organization called StopAntisemitism urged US Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate Ms. Rachel, claiming she has been spreading “Hamas propaganda” to her audience.
