Istanbul: May 1 Workers’ Day marked across Turkey
It was observed that there were also some different groups in cortege. There are some people who gathered under the banner that says that "Rights and Freedoms Front" chanted slogans in favor of illegal DHKP/C organization. People in the group of Democratic People’s Party (DEHAP) chanted illegal slogans in Turkish and Kurdish. Some groups of people who participated in May 1 celebrations chanted slogans against the United States.
Tight security measures were taken in Istanbul where police said that about 50,000 people attended the rally.
Meanwhile, calling the protest illegal, truncheon-wielding police swooped on the demonstrators in centrally located Taksim square. The riot police arrested some 30 left-wing illagal protestors.
The authorities had given permission to some leading trade unions and civic organizations to hold May Day rallies in several cities, including Istanbul and Ankara. May 1 demonstrations have in the past led to clashes between security forces and demonstrators in Turkey.
