Israel: Memorandum To Sharon
Harsh policy pursued by the government of Ariel Sharon to subdue Palestinians started to cause disturbance at the very high ranks of the army. Subsequently, the remarks of Israeli Chief of Joint Staff Moshe Ya’alon, who said that the tough policies directed towards Palestinians damaged the strategic interests of the country, caused extensive repercussions in Israel.
Ya’alon told Yedioth Aharonoth daily that restrictions on going out and freedom to travel imposed on Palestinians threatened the security of Israel. Ya’alon drew attention to the fact that such measures intensified the hatred toward Israel and strengthened radical organizations. Ya’alon said; We act to the detriment of our interests with our tactical decisions. Israel also played a role in the failure of Mahmud Abbas because she did not help him expand his authority.
Upon these remarks of Ya’alon, an official from the Israeli government said; The statements of Ya’alon are legal. However he should have not disclose his views before media. I do not think that he said right things to right people. Prime Minister Sharon and Defense Minister Shaul Mophaz are very much disturbed by these statements and they hoe that it would not repeat.
