Iraqi gunmen kill at least one Turkish driver

One of the wounded drivers said they came under fire from gunmen while transporting canned juice to the U.S. military in Mosul.

There were conflictimg reports from international news agencies over the number of Turkish victims. First reports said two Turkish drivers died in the attack but later the second driver killed in the attack was reported to have been from a Balkan country.

One Turkish victim of the attack was identified as Hasan Mustafa by the Anatolia news agency.

Turkish officials were not immediately available for comment before the TDN went to print yesterday.

Many Turkish truck drivers have been attacked or kidnapped along the highway from Turkey to Iraq. Some Turkish companies operating in Iraq have withdrew from the country to save the lives of their kidnapped employees. The Turkish Foreign Ministry after consulting with transportation firms set a number of measures for the safety of Turkish drivers and workers in Iraq.
