Investigation begins into Sakarya train crash
Part of the investigation is focusing on the speedometer of the high-speed train, according to Suleyman Karaman, the Director General of Turkish State Railways (TCDD).
A study of the mechanism will show whether the express was travelling at speeds higher than those authorised for the section of track near the village of Mekece, in the province of Sakarya, Karaman said.
In the hours after the accident, the TCDD chief said that high speed had been ruled out as the cause of the crash,
“We haven’t increased speed of the trains in this region,” he told reporters. “This accident shouldn’t have happened at this speed. This is not normal.”
The new high speed rail link between Istanbul and the capital had only been launched on June 4
