India, UK vow to enhance bilateral ties
ANKARA
India and the UK on Saturday vowed to enhance bilateral relations, officials said on Saturday.
During a visit to New Delhi, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy “conveyed the UK’s strong interest in further enhancing cooperation across key sectors including trade and investment, defence and security, technology, innovation, and clean energy,” said an Indian Foreign Ministry statement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lammy exchanged views on regional and global issues, the statement said, and Lammy also held talks with his Indian counterpart S. Jaishankar.
Referring to an April 22 attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 people and escalated Indian-Pakistani tensions, Lammy “strongly condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and expressed support for India’s fight against cross border terrorism. PM Modi underscored the need for a decisive international action against terrorism and those who support it,” said the Indian side.
Lammy’s visit to New Delhi comes nearly a month after he visited Pakistan.
The trip came in the wake of military escalation between the two nuclear-armed South Asian neighbors, which died down after the US mediated a ceasefire on May 10.
On Lammy’s meeting with Jaishankar, India’s top diplomat wrote: “Our conversation focused on the significant strides being made by the India UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”
He added: “Agreed that as our collaboration continues to grow, new opportunities emerge.”
On his talks with Jaishankar, Lammy wrote on X: “We are advancing a new era in UK-India relations – boosting trade and technology, tackling the climate crisis and providing greater security for our people.”
In his meeting with Modi, the top UK diplomat said they would “continue working together to deepen our partnership, celebrate our unique living bridge, and deliver growth and security.”
