Ildem: Annan Plan Is Far From Meeting Fundamental Concerns And Expectations Of The Turkish Side
Recalling that the U.N. Secretary General Annan for a second time presented the sides on the island the revised plan on February 26, Ildem said agreement of the two sides could not be provided on the plan yet, stating that there were sections and aspects in the text which should be completed by the sides.
Ildem said, ”the U.N. Secretary General accepted to make changes in the plan till March 25 in case agreed by the sides. The plan, in its current state, is far from meeting the fundamental concerns and expectations of the Turkish side. It is clear that reaching a just and lasting peace on Cyprus can only be possible with a solution agreement that will be agreed by the two sides. It is known that the Greek Cypriot side has presented the U.N. Secretary general their proposal for changes on the plan. Turkish Cypriot side will also present its proposals.”
Ildem said resorting the plan, in its current state, to referendum was an issue which the sides on the island should decide through their own democratic and constitutional structures, and noted that Turkey always showed the necessary respect and care to the will of the TRNC and security and welfare of the Turkish Cypriot people.”
Ildem said, ”Turkey’s entering under an obligation on those issues in the way which the U.N. Secretary General wanted under the light of its rights and commitments stemming from the international agreements, will naturally depend on Turkey’s constitutional rules.”
Ildem said Turkey would continue to be in solidarity and cooperation with Mr. Denktas on the Cyprus national cause, and it supports the constructive efforts which Mr. Denktas carries out on the way to peace.
