‘If Turkey Fulfills Copenhagen Criteria, E.U. will Keep its Promise’

Schröder also had the following to say about Turkey-E.U. relations: "Turkey has had connections with the E.U. for over 40 years. Later this year, the European presidents will reach a decision about whether or not Turkey may begin the membership discussions.

Turkey has made significant efforts to fulfill the required conditions. As a result of the Erdogan government’s reform policy, Turkey has made a great leap forward on the way to Europe. Finding a solution to the Cyprus issue before May 1 would be another positive signal. The Turkish government’s stance will have an important role in this. If Turkey fulfills the Copenhagen Criteria by the latter part of this year, that is, if it comes into compliance with human rights protocols and affords appropriate protections to the minorities, the E.U. will keep its promise. Turkey can trust Germany in the future as well."
